Below you will find a sampling of the educational experiences I have designed. Please click the materials folder to view select items associated with each project.
Soul Food Fridays.Lansing Community CollegeSoul Food Fridays is an organization-wide affinity group for Black/African-American employees and students, and their allies. The goal of the committee was to plan ongoing monthly Friday meetings around the spirit of Soul Food: breaking bread with others in similar circumstances toward liberation and full autonomy.
Through reiterative design processes and project management, I chaired the committee in creating a charter & mission, ongoing themed sessions across the year, developed the Soul Food Fridays Recipe Book (a collaborative project derived from the college community), assessments to gauge effectiveness, and consistent marketing/messaging to multiple levels of stakeholders. Alongside our organization-wide goals, I emphasized self-care and embodiment in facilitating the weekly committee meetings. |
Graduate Consultant Onboarding & Training Program. The Writing Center @ MSUThis program matched experienced graduate student consultants with new graduate consultants to foster community and provide support alongside a semester-long professional training & onboarding program. The intention of this program was to create spaces for community building of new employees, mentoring across consultants, answering questions about the center and its consulting philosophies, as well as introduce and continue professional conversations happening in the larger field.
Core aspects of the program included a robust orientation provided at the beginning of the semester, including a mentor matching session, intake and exit surveys, bi-weekly meetings in large group or pairs, readings for reflection and preparation for group meetings, and ongoing professional development provided by me based on each new consultants unique personal and professional identity. The program consisted of approximately 20-40 participants each semester, including 10-20 new consultants and their mentors. |
Advising Syllabus & Outreach Campaigns.TRIO Student Support ServicesThe purpose of the advising syllabus was to provide a living resource of comprehensive materials for new and continuing academic specialists. My goal in designing this document and the processes around it was to continuously inform Academic Specialists and other staff in the TRIO Student Support Services program how we deliver services to learners. This resource was a guide to situate the practice of staff in intentional, data driven, and historical contexts while maintaining the individualized nature of services rendered to students to meet their diverse needs.
In addition to the advising syllabus, my work as Lead Academic Specialist also involved designing a process of reaching the 600+ students in explicit outreach campaigns that systematically drove traffic at key times during the semester given the limited number of advisors. |
Office Consultation Project.College of Communication, Arts, and SciencesThrough a consultation project at Michigan State University, I worked collaboratively with three other team members to assess a problem in the College of Communication, Arts, and Sciences. We investigated and designed a solution to a college curriculum designed for four years of scaffolded education in which students would frequently transfer in during their second or third year. This transference created a problem with persistence of new students in the college as well as impacted the limited resources the college had to dedicate to academic and career advising staff. Through a design process that mirrored the ADDIE model of design, we used focus groups and interviews to gather relevant information from various stakeholders, consulted with content area experts in the designing of applications, considered peer organizations to benchmark common practices, and ultimately delivered a data driven solution with budget and timetable for implementation.
