Home.I was born and raised in Flint, MI. My grandparents traveled to Michigan via the Great Migration, which saw a generation of African Americans move from the southern United States to industrial towns in the north. My history is an important part of my love for this region and why I do the work that I do. I carry my ancestors' legacy with me wherever I go. |
Education. My education began at Kendall College of Art and Design where I studied Digital Media before I transferred to the University of Michigan-Flint to study Art Education and English Education. During my time at the university, I discovered my love for higher education design and facilitating experiences for adult learners. This desire to facilitate dynamic learning environments led me to pursue a higher education master's degree and graduate certificate in teaching and learning from Michigan State University. There I learned the power of literacy and how people not only read texts, but we, as Sojourner Truth once said, "read the world". My education has been dedicated to helping others read and navigate their worlds, leading me to my current doctoral work in the Writing, Rhetoric, and Culture PhD program at Michigan State University. |
Career.Beyond my education, my career has also seen me working in environments where I can help learners be successful. From working with 1st graders at an elementary school, facilitating onboarding and training for resident assistants, teaching classes to new students about how to be successful in college, and intentionally designing curriculum via learning activities that challenge our preconceived notions around language, I have worked to put myself in spaces where I can help others connect their learning experiences to their every day lives. |
Goal.My overall goal is to facilitate humans becoming who they feel they were born to be. We are of this world and therefore nothing in this world is beyond us. With proper support, accountability, grace, and motivation, all humans are capable of being learners and it is this truth that drives my work. |
